AGM & Industry Lunch 2017

Friday 10 March 2017

Leicester Racecourse

Introducing an exciting new event format for 2017, BASA members are invited to book tickets for themselves and any guests to join us at Leicester Racecourse where we will be delighted to inform members about the work carried out on your behalf over 2016.

Leicester Racecourse is a dual Flat and National Hunt venue located in the East Midlands, hosting 31 race meetings throughout the year, but they are not just a racecourse, they are also an outstanding venue for our 2017 Industry Lunch and AGM. The Industry Lunch has been scheduled on a race day and included in your ticket price will be the full day’s race events, an inspirational speaker and the services of a tipster so why not book now to come and join us for all the excitement of the races.

Friday 10th March is the final National Hunt Race of the season and promises to be an exciting addition to our popular Industry Lunch programme. Leicester Racecourse has a giant screen at every fixture, which is located in the centre of the course by the winning line and will mean a great view of each race. Leicester Racecourse’s history dates back to 1773 when it was based at Victoria Park. A move to Oadby in 1883 saw a larger course and potential for greater numbers to come and spectate at what is Leicester Racecourse’s now-familiar home.

Guests of member companies are welcome too and should join us at the close of the AGM (approximately 11am). Seating is informal unless a company table is required.

Bookings must close on 24th February but early Bird rates are only available up until 31st January 2017, so members are advised to book early to guarantee their place for what promises to be an exciting and informative day out.

After Lunch Speaker

The 2017 after lunch speaker will be Bob Champion MBE.

With a racing career taking him to the States, Bob rode several winners and enjoyed a fruitful sporting career, until, at the age of 30, he was given the devastating news that he had cancer and was given six months to live. Bob came through the chemotherapy and returned to riding, against all odds, with several winners.

In 1981 Bob won the Grand National on Aldaniti, and two years later finally retired from racing after over 500 wins, including The Tote Eider Chase, The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, The Black & White Hurdle, The SGB Chase, The SGB Hurdle and the Whitbread Trial Chase.

Awarded an MBE, Bob formed the Bob Champion Cancer Trust which, to date, has raised over ten million pounds towards cancer research. Bob’s story is played out in the book ‘Champion’s Story’ and was made into a movie starring John Hurt.

In December 2011, Bob Champion received the Helen Rollason award as part of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year competition.
